Irkal Series # 2 : Lalita

Regular price $450.00 USD Sale

The quilts in this series have been made using the traditional Irkal Sarees of Maharashtra also called Ilkal. It is a traditional form of saree which is a common feminine wear in India.  Irkal saree takes its name from the town of Irkal in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka. They are very popular in the area that I live, since my town is on the border of Maharashtra & Karnatakja.

Irkal sarees are woven using cotton warp on the body and art silk warp for border and art silk warp for pallu portion of the saree. In some cases instead of art silk, pure silk is also used.

I am naming these quilts after some of the biggest and the most well known names from the Marathi Film Industry.

This quilt is named Lalita, after the veteran actress, Lalita Pawar. She was one of the most popular negative characters in the Marathi Film Industry. she became a household name after playing Mantahar in Ramayan (Ramanand Sagar).

This quilt is made with improv pieced pieces of Irkal Sarees with some of the pieces even retaining their zari borders.

The quilt is light weight and uses a thin piece of cotton fabric instead of batting. Perfect to be used as a bed spread or a quilt in warmer climates.
